Launched during the TINA Festival in Newcastle in October 2005, TiN Radio is live online every day, plus on FM during special events. TiN is a non-commercial, community based and volunteer-run radio station based in Newcastle. We are permanently streaming at tin.org.au and aspire to hold a full community licence.

TiN RADIO MISSION STATEMENT

At TiN Radio we seek to educate, inspire and entertain through programming that reflects the diversity of the local community. We seek to provide a space for media access and education, placing equipment, skills and critical tools in the hands of the community. We aim to serve with particular regard for those overlooked or under-represented by other media and to provide a forum for the exchange of cultural and intellectual ideas and music.

TiN Radio originates from the This Is Not Art-Festival, a media and arts festival held in spring every year in and around Newcastle's CBD.

For the last several years the This Is Not Art-Festival received a special FM broadcasting license over the duration of the festival. Each year an enthusiastic group of volunteers would set up in the Newcastle town hall and create spontaneous and alternative radio live sessions with the input of a lot of festival visitors and participators to host shows, DJ-ing interviews, live forums and performances.

In 2005, we eventually found a REAL live radio station with FM and online broadcast and since then we are continuously broadcasting online.

TiN has had several other special FM broadcasts, such as the Youth Week, the International Women’s Day, the Shoot Out Festival, Rainbow Week and the Stomp Festival.

During its first year and a half TiN Radio has been located in the first floor of the Hunter Street Civic Arcade but in early 2007 we moved our studio to reunite with the organisation behind TiN Radio: the Octapod - independent arts and media association Newcastle.

In March 2007 we were ready to re-launch a new and even better looking and sounding TiN Radio and are now online 24/7 and continue to make a contribution to the community by regularly organising concerts featuring Newcastle bands.

Big thanks to Kim Honan and David Mcdonald, for the work they did in the past for the special Tina FMs, and to Justine Lloyd, Meegan Jones and Michelle Nunn for where we are today. And everyone one else who has helped us along the way.
